Make these addictive butter toffee pretzels that perfectly balance sweet brown sugar toffee with salty crunch. This quick recipe is ideal for parties, game days, or edible gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bag (12 ounces) mini pretzels
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Spread the mini pretzels in a single layer across the prepared baking sheets.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a full boil. Let it boil for exactly one minute without stirring after it begins to boil.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat immediately. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Quickly stir in the baking soda. The mixture will foam up significantly.
  6. Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the pretzels on the baking sheets. Use a spatula to gently spread the coating over the pretzels. Do not overmix, or the pretzels may break.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the sheets from the oven and gently stir the pretzels to ensure even coating. Return to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the pretzels cool completely on the baking sheets before breaking them apart. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt over the pretzels immediately after removing them from the oven.
  • If you want a nostalgic, ‘Church Lady’ style treat, you can add 1 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the pretzels before coating them with the toffee.
  • These make excellent homemade edible gifts when packaged in clear cellophane bags tied with a ribbon.
