Make this easy, retro Hanky Panky recipe featuring a savory sausage and cheese filling baked on pumpernickel bread. It is a crowd-pleasing party food idea perfect for game days or holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 loaf pumpernickel bread or rye bread, sliced into small squares or cut into rounds

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease completely.
  3. Transfer the cooked sausage to a medium mixing bowl.
  4. Add the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt to the bowl with the sausage.
  5. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly until the mixture is uniform and creamy. This is your cheesy meat filling.
  6. Place the bread pieces on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Spoon a generous amount of the sausage and cheese mixture onto each piece of bread. Press the mixture down lightly.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges of the bread are lightly toasted.
  9. Serve these savory baked bites warm immediately.

Notes

  • For a slightly different texture, you can use sliced French bread instead of pumpernickel.
  • You can prepare the filling mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to two days before assembling and baking.
  • If you prefer a sharper flavor, substitute half of the cheddar cheese with Monterey Jack.
