Make this easy homemade teriyaki sauce in minutes. It creates a thick, glossy, sweet, and savory glaze perfect for chicken, stir-fries, or as an Asian marinade.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Combine the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, rice vinegar, grated ginger, and minced garlic in a small saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring until the brown sugar dissolves completely.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and sesame oil until smooth. This creates a slurry.
  4. Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce while whisking constantly.
  5. Continue to cook and whisk for 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  6. Remove the sauce from the heat. It will thicken more as it cools. Use immediately as a glaze or marinade, or store it for later use.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, increase the cornstarch slightly, adding only 1/2 teaspoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
  • This sauce works well as a teriyaki chicken sauce or a dipping sauce for appetizers.
  • You can substitute honey for brown sugar for a slightly different sweetness profile.
